New Primary Health Centres Commissioned Across Remote Delta Communities

Delta State has commissioned six new primary health centres across remote riverine communities, a move officials say will significantly cut travel times for maternal, child and emergency care in areas previously hours away from the nearest functioning clinic by boat.

Each facility is equipped with a basic maternity ward, a small laboratory and solar-powered refrigeration for vaccine storage, addressing a long-standing cold-chain gap that had limited routine immunisation coverage in some of the affected communities. State health officials say staffing remains a challenge, with recruitment incentives being offered to attract resident nurses and midwives to the more remote postings.

Community leaders welcomed the commissioning but noted that previous facilities built in similar programmes have struggled with erratic drug supply once the initial commissioning attention faded. "A building is not a health centre if the shelves are empty three months later," said one women's group leader who attended the commissioning ceremony.

The state ministry of health says it has budgeted for a dedicated drug revolving fund to keep the new centres stocked and plans a follow-up assessment in six months to evaluate utilisation and supply continuity.
