INEC Ward-Level Registration Drive Records Strong Turnout Across Niger Delta States

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says a recent ward-level continuous voter registration drive recorded strong turnout across Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States, with officials describing the numbers as a sign of heightened political engagement ahead of the next general election cycle.

Registration centres in several local government areas reported queues extending well beyond capacity on peak registration days, prompting INEC to extend hours at a number of high-turnout centres. A significant share of new registrants were first-time voters under the age of 25, according to preliminary figures released by the commission's state offices.

"What we are seeing suggests young people in this region are not opting out of the process, whatever the frustrations with past elections," a state INEC administrator said, while cautioning that registration figures alone do not guarantee turnout on election day.

Civil society election monitors have urged INEC to ensure permanent voter cards are distributed promptly and that new polling units are created in fast-growing riverine communities where existing units have become badly overcrowded. The commission says it will publish a full breakdown of registration figures by local government area in the coming weeks.
